Wall Hanging
Moving to Denver after graduating with a BFA in photography, I found myself seeking projects that cultivated a creative career path. I secured a position at GOOG, a local design/ build firm that transformed many amazing interiors for various nightclubs, restaurants, local start up businesses and lofts in the Denver Metro area. I spent many hours getting tangled up the cords of numerous grinders; learning skills associated with custom design, fabrication, welding, and installation.
I then found myself craving something deeper and applied to the national teaching corps, Teach For America. I was accepted and became a 2003 corps member in the New Mexico corps, where I taught gifted and talented education as well as art to students on the Navajo Nation. While living on a teacherage in Pueblo Pintado, I discovered a goldmine of old American cars and metal debris hiding in the abandoned arroyos and sands of the New Mexico desert. I began creating wall hangings from these ancient metal treasures.
After living three years on the reservation, I moved to Albuquerque and continued teaching as well as pursued more formal art opportunities. I began fabricating more wall hanging sculptures and was supported by the local art community through funding and a solo show as at the Harwood Art Center (ABQ). I have also been fortunate enough to have some opportunities in Taos through Taos Center for the Arts and Stables gallery. This body of work even won a competitive award and purchase that landed a little press in “Art in America” in 2008. My wall hangings have traversed many Southwest environs. This body of work signifies my humble beginnings as a metal sculptor and captures the catalyst to my artistic career. A number of pieces are still available for sale.
